CSM MA Narrative Environments and MA Cities are co-producing ZERO, a 24 hour live marathon radio broadcast on 10 & 11 November, 2022 in collaboration with Ain Shams University Smart & Sustainable Cities Lab in Cairo for COP27 in Egypt. The British Council broadcast will explore futures for planetary cities, societies, and interspecies connections based on carbon drawdown, examining the implications for numbers (computation, calculation and redistribution) in these narratives. The broadcast will explore the ways in which public numeracy (the faculties of numbers, data, and measurement) can support the climate emergency. The point of the broadcast is to engage the next generations of the future in the conversation at COP27, which is typically dominated by adult leaders. The goal is to engage narratives around math, science, and data; rather than consider these as violent reductions, we can consider them as design tools for addressing who and what doesn’t get counted or valued within our systems.
The show will be co-broadcast live from universities in Cairo and London in collaboration with http://spatialradio.live and http://radioee.net. The show will also mark the launch of a new radio station in Cairo at Ain Shams, sharing the tools of dialogue, listening, and radio technologies with Cairo university students and youth.
